On the 17th of April 2026, the European Securities and Markets Authority issued a statement to clarify supervisory expectations regarding the end of transitional periods under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (2023/1114/EU, MiCAR). The statement outlines the expectations for crypto-asset service providers on wind-down plans and client migration strategies, the expectations for national competent authorities regarding the verification of these plans and strategies, and warnings for consumers before investing or transferring funds.
The MiCA transitional period will expire across the EU on the 1st of July 2026. After this date, any entity providing crypto-asset services to EU clients without a MiCA license will be in breach of EU law and must stop offering such services.
