On 13 December 2024, the European Banking Authority (EBA) published the Report from its fourth and final round of reviews of competent authorities (CAs)’ approaches to tackling ML/TF risks in the banking sector. On the one hand, the Report highlighted significant progress in CAs’ approaches to supervision since the first round of reviews in 2018, which was reflected in good practices related to, for instance, cooperation and risk assessments. On the other hand, the Report considered CAs’ risk assessment methodologies and enforcement processes not fully effective or deterrent and found divergences in the way prudential supervisors consider and address ML/TF risks.
The EBA will carry out a final review of the actions taken by CAs in 2025, with the aim to assess AML/CFT supervision of banks, and will then publish a final report as part of the EBA’s handover to the EU Anti-Money Laundering Authority (AMLA).
